15 years ago, I was 20 and in college. I used to draw comics since a was a kid, but I had never taken it too seriously. My projects were never too ambitious, neither in size nor in purpose. Or they were too ambitious, and then I didn't even finish them. Also, I had never been a good writer, neither to create stories nor to write dialogues.

But that summer was different. Three years before, I had begun to draw what I thought was a good story, written by my friend Jaume Albertí.

Jaume is, basically, the person responsible for me drawing comics in the first place. And unlike me, he had a twisted and sick mind for drama, plot and characters. And he had exploited and refined this talent through amateur comics and role-playing games. So for me it was a stroke of luck that he wrote a whole script for me, with his own characters, in the tradition of fantasy and adventure. This way, I only had to try hard to tell that story in the most effective way.

When that summer began, I had completed only some 20 pages. But I had two full months ahead of me, and the complete freedom to finish that comic that had been eluding me for so many months. It was this combination of circumstances that made it possible for me to finish The Rain Song, for many years my best experience as an artist.

It was my longest and most demanding project to the date. For the first time, I drew it myself completely, both pencil and ink. I experimented with characters design, with elements of a fantasy setting. I took risks with the graphic narrative, letting out text blocks, movement lines or sound texts. I played with the angles, bloated page compositions, variations in the viewpoints, switching between action scenes, long conversations, moments of emotion and moments of epic. Backed by the script, I trusted that my characters and the story would be able to convey emotion. That they could make a lasting impression.

All this is the bare minimum that one would expect from a decent comics artist. But for me, it was the first time I believed I could be more than just an amateur comics artist. Maybe that's why I took it so seriously, planning, revising and even repeating pages until I felt they were the best I was capable of.

I could've never imagined that 15 years later, The Rain Song would be my best cover letter, a work of learning, rough and with obvious faults, but full of enthusiasm and freedom. And with a story and characters that keep passing the test of time.

So 15 years later, during which only a few close friends could enjoy this work, I'm pleased to introduce to you The Rain Song, the great adventure of a group of fantasy heroes, looking for a fabulous treasure at the end of the rainbow.

As for me, I'm on my own way looking for another trasure. A treasure I knew in 1995, thanks to a guy named Jaume Albertí.

You can read online The Rain Song (in spanish!) (and donwload it for free) on Issuu.com. And by the end of July, it will be available for print by demand on Bubok.

Paso 2: Storyboard.
